San Diego

October 22-November 3
We left Dana Point with calm seas and little wind. Only when we turned into San Diego did the winds come up. We spent about 45 minutes dodging lobster pots. We pulled into the Shelter Island Police Dock seven hours later. Our home for two weeks. We were greeted by Kim aboard Amazing Grace. The people we’ve met along the way have been so nice and helpful. The area around our dock is gorgeous. Large two story homes facing the water. It’s funny, being on a police dock you’d think you’d be safe, but there are many sketchy live aboards among us. The restrooms at night bring many homeless people.
Shelter Island is about a 1/2 hour walk away. Have made many trips into town. All of the grocery stores are a bus or Uber ride away. Nina/Bill pulled in next to us the second night. The four of us took a trip into Otay Mesa, Mexico to pick up our TIP, which is a temporary import permit needed for all boats heading to Mexico. It reminded me of Trains, planes and automobiles. A long, long and hot day. 7 1/2 hours later we succeeded. We got our first taste of Mexican tacos... so delicious.
We’ve been spending time on our new SUP. Very fun. I haven’t taken it in any rough waters yet, but I’m getting there. The weather here is very calm in the am and in the middle of the afternoon the winds come up.
Shellie/Randy on Moondance was the next couple we met. They are from Boise Idaho. We four hit it off right away and have been spending lots of time together.
Rented a car for 2 days and made a trip to Costco and Trader Joe’s for more provisions. Went all over town looking for scooters. Not the electric kind, but the manual kind. I got one and Kevin ordered one on Amazon. We have been all over town on them. It’s a great workout.
There is a hotel here with a outdoor concert area. Humphries. Many big bands have played there. Three Dog Night was playing and we took our dingy up and got a great view and listened to the music for an hour and a half. They actually sounded good. It was so much fun.
Went to DownWind Marine for a meet and greet of all Haha participants. Met a lot of people we will be sailing with. There are 151 boats in the rally.
Bill/Dar on Senor Moment from Ventura were the couple on our starboard side. They are a blast. She and I are so much alike as well as Bill and Kevin. We both miss our family and friends terribly so have decided to spend the holidays together. Hope it works out.
There are many seminars put on by the Haha. Communication, cruising the Sea of Cortez, navigation,  Coast Guard Rescue, etc.  We’ve tried to catch most of them.
I hooked up with Darlene Sweringin for the day. Walked for a couple of hours and had lunch. It was so fun to catch up w/her. Just what the doctor ordered.  Made me miss my walking partner, Rita....
As usual with a boat, all our friends on the dock have been working on their vessels. We had to replace two large batteries.
I hosted a HH with 10 of the boats around us doing the Haha. Fun to learn everyone’s story of how they got here. We finally met Kevin/Carla on Gargoyle from Vancouver BC who we’ve seen almost everywhere we’ve stopped. Unfortunately, they aren’t doing the Haha, but I’m sure we will see them in Mexico soon. I was invited to the Silvergate Yacht Club for a dinner for women sailors. Met some amazing women who’ve been all around the world. Made me feel like a real novice, but loved gaining knowledge from them.
Monty joined us on Thursday 31. It was great to have him back aboard Raven. Kevin and he went to work on the many projects that seem to come up daily. He is a delight to have around. Also, it takes the work load off me! I’ve been cooking up a storm for the passage coming up. Chili, meatloaf, enchiladas and lasagna.
A costume party with all Haha participants ended our last day as well as dinner with our buddies

before shove off. Looks like light winds ahead. First strip Turtle Bay 360 miles away. Looking forward to the next journey.
