Ventura
Wednesday 10/9
Couldn’t wait to leave this morning and get away from this windy island. Our anchor was imbedded quite deeply due to the prolonged exhaustive gale force winds. Kevin had another sleepless night.
Put the Genoa up and motor sailed all day with very flat seas. Tried using the auto pilot again but it would work for awhile and stop. Hand steered most of the way. Thankful for a calm day. Again, we had tons of dolphins playing around the boat. We never get tired of watching them. I always thought I’d like to come back as a bird someday, but maybe not. A dolphins life looks really fun.
Made it to Ventura in record time. Tied up to the guest dock at Ventura Yacht Club and couldn’t wait to take a well deserved shower. Met Tim and Lee French on Sojourn from Morro Bay who are doing the Haha as well.
Thursday 10/10
Took a walk around the Marina. It’s a nice complex with lots of boutiques, restaurants and galleries. Found a sailmaker to repair our mainsail. A small tear and chafing from the spreaders. A 400+ repair that was unexpected. Just glad we had it repaired before it got any worse. As usual, we cleaned up the boat and organized everything that seems to get out of place . Ally and Spencer came to the marina as well so she and I walked around the shopping area. She came by for apps and a drink. A quiet evening of dinner and scrabble.
Friday 10/11
Oh boy, woke up to the Santa Anna winds howling. Gary and Val Roche were supposed to visit today but due to the winds they couldn’t even get here as the freeways were closed. 70 thousand people were evicted from their homes. The dirt that was flying through the air was unbelievable. We were going to go for a walk, instead buttoned up the boat as tight as we could. I think I’ll take rain over this weather any day. The Yacht Club was having a pasta night and we were invited. It was quite delicious. Sat with Tim/Lee and met another couple from here, Bob and Diane. They are in their
80’s and she still swims in the ocean everyday. Amazing. Met Ally and Spencer for some music. They leave in the morning. Hope to catch up with them in Punta Mita where they own an Airbnb.
