Last day in Morro Bay
Saturday 10/5
Took our rental car back. Sure was fun seeing the area on land. Spent a few hours on San Luis Obispo. What a sweet and beautiful town. All the modern day stores with a home town feeling.
Had lunch at a nice vegan cafe. I would love to visit there another time.
Back in Morro Bay, there was a Harvest Festival going on. The town was booming with visitors. A car show with a couple dozen “woody” cars from the 30/40’s. Stunning. Boy I would love to own one of those. Got together with Campbell, Jen, Paul, Sharon, Ally and Spencer for some fun time listening and dancing to a great band. Boy, when did we get so old. The average age on the dance floor was 60+. Had dinner and to bed early. We are really going to miss this place. My favorite so far.
Sunday 10/6
Shoved off at 6:45 am. A pod of dolphins greeted us. It is so much fun watching them swim along the bow. We motor sailed the entire day as there was no wind. The main and Genoa gave us a push. We had a perfect sunny day with small swells. 3/4’s of the way the auto pilot gave out on us. Hand steered the rest of the way. No other boats in site. About 100 dolphins came along side of us for about 10 minutes. They’re such fun and happy little things. Pulled into Cojo at about 6:30. Tired and ready for dinner and to bed early. Just a spot to anchor for the night.
Monday 10/7
Left Cojo @ 9:45. A bit of a rolling night. Overcast skies which we hadn’t seen for awhile. We were able to sail most of the day with the Genoa and main out. The Hydrovane did its job. Mostly getting 6+ knots. Swells were small. A perfect sailing day. Went into San Miguel Island. Gypsy and Spruce were there. Weren’t able to get together as the wind came up and it
was a bit to rocky to put the dinghy in the water. There was a baby grey whale that circled the bay. It came close to the boat. Our afternoon entertainment. Winds got wicked in the evening. 35-50 knots. Needless to say we slept up in the cockpit to be on anchor watch. Not a good nights rest.
Tuesday 10/8
A mild morning. Thank goodness. Said good bye to our friends. Got the dinghy in the water and went to shore. Took a hike up the mountain. There is a camp site, ranger station and a nice burial spot for
Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo who discovered the island in 1542. There was so much different floral than we are used to. A breathtaking view from the top.
By the time we got back down the wind was blowing again. A tough row for Kevin. Made sure everything was tied down securely and proceeded to watch people come and go. Read a little and decided to hit the sack early knowing we weren’t going to get much sleep. Another gale wind came
up and lasted until 2:30 am. Ugh!!! We don’t want to go through that again. Spruce and Gypsy were smart to leave.
