HH at Oakland Yacht Club

Friday 9/13
Awoke to the sounds of the city all round us. Commuter trains sounding their horns at every crossing, pile driving across the channel, crew coaches barking out orders as the sleek shells glide by. Gina and I power walked the 6 mile round trip the Svendsons Marine for some hardware. On the return home Gina stopped in the Verizon store and was convinced her battery was at the end of its life and she needed to purchase a new phone The clerk likened it to a car battery stating they don’t last forever. My thought was when a car battery goes bad you don’t buy a new car. Anyway we were a little shocked to discover we paid over 100.00 for California state tax. Oh well! In the late afternoon it was so hot on the boat we decided to go up to the club and sit in the shade and have happy hour. Shortly thereafter we met Michelle one of the members and she convinced us to head up to the bar on the 2nd floor. This was our first trip aloft to the club bar and we were all very impressed with the layout and views of the channel and Oakland beyond. Shortly after sitting down I recognized a well known sailer by the name of Jim Jesse who had been featured in cruising magazines during 2 of he and his wife’s Diana’s two circumnavigations. Diana passed in 2012 to cancer. I introduced our trio and we had a good laugh after Jim started giving what to me was his lopsided opinion of Catalina yachts. All in good fun though. Later he brought over and introduced us to his friend of 60+years Jocelyn Nash who in her own right was the female pioneer of the professional sailing world. Jocelyn first raced the transpacific in 1955 the same year Gina and I were born. She went on to win many SF bay and Hawaii races steering boats to victory over the next 4 decades and at the age of 90 still sails every chance she gets. Afterword Gina, Monte and I retired to Raven for a chicken bar-b-cue and later joined our neighbors Terry and Maria for a nightcap. What a fun day.
